The UK government guidance on the wearing of face masks in public has stayed same throughout the crisis so far: the government has advised the public to to stay focused on social distancing and then washing your hands rather than wearing face masks in public. However, Nicola Sturgeon’s government in Holyrood has decided to make different recommendations and is advising people to wear a masks in public places if they want to. This is much the same as in many other countries around the world but it’s not the policy of World Health Organization .
WHO policy is that unless you are showing symptoms, or are caring for people who are suspected to be sick with COVID-19, the public dont have to wear face masks. They think that washing your hands and using socail distancing are best. These guidelines came under review after research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) found that coughs could reach up to six metres away and sneezes could reach up to up to eight metres away . That kind of flies in the face of social distancing guidelines advising people to keep 2 m apart. After much deliberation, the WHO panel decided that its previous advice should stand and that medical masks should be reserved for healthcare workers and not the general public. This decision contradicts that taken by the US public health body, the CDC, which recommends that US citizens should wear cloth face masks when out in public. It would seem that even major scientific bodies around the world are split on whether or not people should wear face masks in public.
